Kremer Collection VR

The Kremer Museum
October 26, 2017 - Present

The Kremer Museum is an innovative new concept: an art museum that exists only in virtual reality, presenting masterpieces from The Kremer Collection—a group of over 70 works by leading 17th century Dutch and Flemish artists, including Rembrandt, Aelbert Cuyp and Frans Hals. Available on VIVEPORT, the museum can be experienced by visitors from around the world.

“Our journey as collectors has always been about finding the highest quality of artworks and simultaneously finding ways to share them with as many people as possible,” explains George Kremer, who founded The Kremer Collection with his wife Ilone in 1994. “We believe we can make a greater contribution to the art world by investing in technology rather than in bricks and mortar.”

To create the museum, each painting in The Kremer Collection was photographed between 2,500 and 3,500 times using “photogrammetry”—a technique which builds an ultra-high resolution visual model of each work. The process allows museum visitors to explore brushwork and colors in fine detail, as well as view the reverse of paintings to discover hidden notes and stamps indicating provenance.

The museum was developed by Moyosa Media and designed by architect Johan van Lierop, the founder of Architales, who described the unique freedom of working in virtual reality: “To design a museum without gravity, plumbing orcode regulations is a dream for every architect.”
