How can virtual reality transform an artist’s practice? On the occasion of the 2017 Venice Biennale, VIVE Arts partnered with the Faurschou Foundation to present new VR artworks by Paul McCarthy and Christian Lemmerz. The artists collaborated with Khora Contemporary — a platform dedicated to supporting the development of virtual reality art — translating motifs from their respective oeuvres into a new medium.
German-born, Copenhagen-based artist Christian Lemmerz created a three-minute, looping experience entitled La Apparazione. Drawing inspiration from his 2013 bronze sculpture Bodybuilder Jesus Christ, the piece features a levitating, gilded Jesus whose body convulses intermittently, leaving a trail of glowing embers.
LA-based artist Paul McCarthy’s CSSC VR experiment “What is your name?” revisits characters from his celebrated series Coach Stage Stage Coach, or CSSC. The piece continues McCarthy’s interest in emotional stamina, directly implicating the viewer in an unfolding act featuring two female protagonists.
